KATEŘINA PAVLÍKOVÁ (*1979)

Kateřina Pavlíková rightfully belongs among outstanding personalities of the Czech saxophone scene. Her wide ranging music activities have playing on the baritone saxophone as a concert instrument at their centre. After passing the maturity examination at grammar school she opted for studies of the flute and the saxophone at Jaroslav Ježek Conservatory in Prague (graduated in 2005). As early as in 2001 she won the scholarship competition of Yamaha and CMI Melodia.

A big opportunity for Kateřina came in 1999 with her participation in Bohemia Saxophone Quartet, a prominent Czech music ensemble, in which she has played the baritone saxophone and performed until now. Since its inception in 1990, Bohemia Saxophone Quartet has profiled itself as a highly professional chamber music ensemble with specific, well-balanced sound. It represents an almost unique synthesis of the highest professionalism of interpretation with the widest possible multi-genre dramaturgy, which encompasses original classical and jazz repertoire, contemporary compositions mostly dedicated to the ensemble, as well as a great number of transcriptions and arrangements of most diverse styles of music and genres, of which more than twenty were made by Kateřina. She has performed with Bohemia Saxophone Qurtet at a number of major international music festivals (57th Prague Spring International Music Festival, 26th International Jazz festival Prague, International Saxophone Quartet Festival MADONA – Latvia, 11th International Festival of Contemporary Music CONTRASTS – Ukraine, Suk's Musical Štiřín, Klangspuren 06 – Austria, IX. Dresdner Saxophonmesse – Germany, etc.).

Kateřina Pavlíková also works with another experimental music quartet, Ensemble Bona Fide, performing Baroque compositions in an unusual consonance of the flute, harpsichord and saxophones. In conjunction with yet another young performer, percussionist Markéta Mazourová, Kateřina has created a unique project of quite attractive, but cultivated blend of the sound of the saxophone and percussions.

She has collaborated with leading Czech symphonic and chamber orchestras (Czech Philharmonic Orchestra, Brno Philharmonic Orchestra, Hradec Králové Philharmonic Orchestra, Agon Orchestra, MoEns, etc.). As a soloist, Kateřina Pavlíková has performed with The Band of the Castle Guards and Police of the Czech Republic, Prague Philharmonia, Chamber Philharmonic Orchestra of South Bohemia, Berg Orchestra and Lviv Chamber Orchestra. She has played jazz music with Rudolfinum Jazz Orchestra, Markovič Saxtet, Petr Kořínek Jazz Orchestra, Vít Fiala X-tet, Prague Big Band, and other bands.

Listeners can appreciate Kateřina´s performing qualities on the CD of Bohemia Saxophone Quartet History of Jazz (2009) and Saxcriptions (2005) – where in her transcriptions she managed to preserve the poetry of particular compositions and the spirit of individual composers. She also plays on the CDs Homage to Jaroslav Ježek Rudolfinum Jazz Orchestra (2006), Jazz at Prague Castle of Štěpán Markovič Saxtet (2006), and Just Floating Lightly by Petr Kořínek Jazz Orchestra (2004).

At present Kateřina Pavlíková endeavours to pass on her experience and knowledge gained by concert activities and also her studies with magnificent French saxophone player Philippe Portejoie to other musicians. Since 2008 she has been a tutor of the saxophone at International clarinet festival at Žirovnice castle.
